When laser is focused into a very small spot, it can ablate anything, polymer, semiconductor, metal and even ceramics. With a computer controlled motor stage and a synchronized laser beam, microscale patterns can be "drilled" in the surface.
Like in this piece of hair (diameter 100 microns), name of a student was ablated with feature width of 2 microns.
